At our last meeting, we mostly just worked on the website and did boring work, so I decided not to write a blog post that day. However, today was a busy day and we got a lot of work done. We presented our general outline of the website to the board, but it is still a work in progress so we did not spend too much time on that. Then we moved on to the larger purpose of the meeting.
Given the current circumstances with COVID-19, our board has decided that it may not be possible for us to go to Nicaragua to follow through with our Little Free Library plan, so today we started looking at options that were a bit closer to home. We sat around the table and started throwing out all sorts of ideas.
We discussed donating school supplies and backpacks to kids in a lower-income school district. We also discussed many different collection options such as winter coats, old instruments, sports equipment, toys, and much more. These were all great ideas, but many felt like they had been done before and weren’t original. We felt like we were almost finding loopholes to try to set ourselves apart from other organizations doing the same things.
Then one of our board members brought up the idea of experiences, such as taking kids whose parents didn’t have enough money to the zoo or the art museum. We expanded on the idea of experiences and opportunities and liked all of the suggestions in that category a lot more.
After a lot of debating and thinking, we narrowed down our list to the few that we thought could really work and truly benefit young people in need. Once we had our list, jobs were assigned and our work was mostly done.
Overall, we had a very productive meeting. Even though we changed our plan, I am confident that we can still make a difference through our organization.
